How we design and wire smart home systems
Automation is only as good as the circuits underneath it. This section covers the cabling, containment and control choices we make on real jobs across Loughton, Harlow and the surrounding area, and where domestic and commercial automation projects diverge.
Cabling and containment
For wired lighting control we typically run 1.5mm² or 2.5mm² twin and earth for switched live and neutral circuits, alongside low-voltage Cat6 or dedicated bus cable (such as KNX twisted pair) for control signals, kept in separate containment from mains cabling to avoid induced interference. We protect lighting and control circuits with RCBOs so a fault on one circuit does not take out lighting or heating elsewhere in the property, and we fit surge protection devices (SPDs) at the consumer unit where sensitive control electronics are present, since a single voltage transient can otherwise damage several smart devices at once.
For heating automation we integrate smart thermostats and zone valves with the existing central heating wiring centre, checking that boiler interlock and zone valve wiring still meets manufacturer requirements after a smart thermostat is added, which is a common point of failure in DIY heating automation retrofits.
Domestic versus commercial automation

How much does home automation wiring cost?
There is no published day rate or from-price because every property and system is different. Our minimum charge is £150 plus VAT, and full pricing follows a free, no-obligation site visit where we can see the existing wiring and discuss what you want the system to do.
How long does a smart home installation take?
A single smart lighting circuit retrofit might take a day. A full house of automation integrated during a rewire runs alongside that rewire programme, often one to three weeks depending on scope. We confirm timescales in the written quote after survey.
Do I need an electrician or can I DIY smart switches?
Simple plug-in smart devices can be self-installed, but any switch replacement, new circuit, or work in a kitchen or bathroom is notifiable under Building Regulations and should be carried out and certified by a qualified electrician such as an NICEIC Approved Contractor.
Will I get a certificate for the work?
Yes. As a City & Guilds 2391 tester and NICEIC Approved Contractor, we test every circuit to BS 7671 18th Edition and issue the appropriate certification on completion, which you should keep with your property documents.
How long does the wiring behind a smart system last?
Correctly installed cabling and containment will outlast several generations of hubs, apps and control devices, often decades, provided the original design accounted for realistic future loads rather than only the devices fitted on day one.
Can you retrofit automation into an older house without rewiring it?
