What happens if a fault is ignored or misdiagnosed

Electrical faults do not fix themselves, and a wrong guess at the cause can mean paying for parts or work that never solves the actual problem, while the underlying fault continues to degrade the installation or, in a genuine worst case, creates a fire risk.

A loose connection or damaged cable insulation generates heat at the point of resistance every time current flows through it. How we actually trace an electrical fault

Test equipment and method

We use calibrated insulation resistance testers, continuity testers, RCD testers and, where needed, thermal imaging to locate hot spots at connections under load. Common domestic fault types

Commercial premises under one of our maintenance contracts benefit from fault history already on file, which speeds up diagnosis considerably, since recurring issues on a specific circuit or piece of plant are already documented rather than being investigated from scratch each time.

When further investigation is needed

Not every fault is found on the first visit. Faults hidden behind fitted furniture, under floors, or within cavity walls sometimes require limited exploratory work, agreed with you in advance, to expose the cable run. We always explain this possibility upfront if the initial testing narrows the fault to a general area rather than an exact point, so there are no surprises about additional access work being needed.

Where a fault turns out to be symptomatic of a wider issue, such as a consumer unit that is genuinely at the end of its service life or wiring that no longer meets current standards, we will say so directly, along with a separate quote for that larger work, rather than folding it into the original fault-finding call-out.

How much does fault finding cost?

There is a £150 plus VAT minimum charge and no published day rate, because the time needed depends entirely on the fault. Straightforward faults are often resolved within the minimum charge; more complex or intermittent faults are quoted after the initial diagnostic visit.

How long does it take to find an electrical fault?

Many faults are found and diagnosed within a single visit lasting one to two hours. Intermittent faults that do not reproduce on demand can take longer, sometimes requiring monitoring equipment left in place over several days.

Can you fix the fault on the same visit?

Often yes, for straightforward repairs such as a failed connection or a faulty accessory. Where the repair needs materials we do not carry, or turns out to be larger than expected, we quote separately, usually within a day.
