It involves checking your existing supply and consumer unit have the capacity to take an additional load safely, selecting the right charger and mounting position, and wiring it to current BS 7671 18th Edition requirements including dedicated RCBO protection and, where needed, earthing arrangements suited to your supply type. Why a poorly installed EV charger is a real risk

An EV charger draws a sustained, high current load for hours at a time, unlike most household appliances. Installed without proper assessment of supply capacity or protection, it can overload circuits, damage the charger, or create a genuine fire risk, and DIY or unqualified installs void OZEV eligibility and manufacturer warranties.

Overloading an inadequate supply

A typical home charger draws up to 7.4kW continuously, which is a significant addition to a domestic supply already running a kitchen, heating and other circuits. Without checking supply capacity first, adding a charger can cause nuisance tripping, or in poorly protected installations, overheating of the incoming supply cable or main fuse.

Missing or incorrect earthing arrangements

Properties on a PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) supply need specific earthing considerations for EV charging, since a broken neutral upstream could otherwise make the car's chassis live via the charging cable. A charger installed without addressing this, sometimes via an earth electrode, is a genuine safety gap, not a technicality.

Voided grants and warranties

OZEV grant eligibility and most charger manufacturer warranties require installation by an approved, accredited installer. A charger fitted by an unqualified installer, or without correct certification, can leave you without warranty cover or grant funding if something later goes wrong.

Cable run and protection shortcuts

Charger installations sometimes need a dedicated circuit run in SWA cable over some distance from the consumer unit to the charging point. Undersized cable, or a circuit shared incorrectly with another load, causes voltage drop and nuisance tripping, and is a common issue with informal or unqualified installs.

    Site visit & survey

    We check your incoming supply capacity, consumer unit condition, distance and route from the consumer unit to the proposed charger location, and earthing arrangement, then discuss charger options suited to your vehicle and usage.

  2. Step 02

    Quotation and charger selection

    You receive a written quote covering the charger unit, cable run, any earthing arrangement required, and installation labour, typically within a day of the visit for a standard domestic installation.

  3. Step 03

    Supply and earthing preparation

    Where required, we install an earth electrode or confirm PME earthing is suitable, and prepare the consumer unit with a dedicated RCBO-protected circuit sized correctly for the charger's rated output.

  4. Step 04

    Charger mounting and cabling

    The charge point is mounted at the agreed position, wired back to the consumer unit via appropriately sized cable, often SWA for external runs, and connected with all terminations checked for a secure, weatherproof fit.

  5. Step 05

    Testing, certification and OZEV paperwork

    The circuit and charger are tested, an Electrical Installation Certificate is issued, and any OZEV or grant scheme paperwork is completed and submitted where you are eligible, so the process is handled fully on your behalf.

The technical detail behind EV charger installation

EV charging circuits interact with your existing supply, earthing arrangement and consumer unit in ways that differ from any other domestic appliance, and BS 7671 18th Edition sets out specific requirements covering earthing, protective devices and cable selection for charge points.

Supply assessment and load calculation

Before quoting, we check the rating of your incoming supply and existing consumer unit, since a 7.4kW charger draws a continuous current that needs to be accommodated alongside existing loads without exceeding the supply's overall capacity. This is particularly relevant in older properties with a lower-rated supply, or where other high-demand appliances such as electric showers or immersion heaters already draw heavily on the same supply.

Where supply capacity is genuinely insufficient, we discuss realistic options, a lower-output charger, load management between circuits, or in rarer cases, liaison with the District Network Operator about a supply upgrade, rather than fitting a charger that will underperform or trip repeatedly.

Earthing arrangements, PME and TT considerations

Most UK properties are supplied via PME (Protective Multiple Earthing), which under fault conditions could theoretically make an EV charging point's earth live if the supply neutral were to fail upstream. BS 7671 and EV charging guidance address this by requiring either an earth electrode (converting the charging point's earthing to a local TT arrangement) or a charger with built-in open-PEN fault protection that disconnects supply automatically if this occurs.

We determine the correct approach for your specific property and supply type during the survey rather than applying a blanket solution, since the right answer depends on supply configuration, charger specification and sometimes advice from the DNO.

Cable selection and circuit protection

EV charging circuits are typically wired in SWA cable for external runs to a garage or driveway-mounted charger, sized to handle sustained full-load current without excessive voltage drop over the run length, and protected by a dedicated RCBO at the consumer unit, never shared with another circuit. Type A or Type B RCD protection is specified according to the charger's own internal protection, since some EV chargers require Type B protection upstream due to DC fault current characteristics from the vehicle's charging electronics.

Where the consumer unit itself is old, undersized, or already fully populated with no spare ways, we advise on whether a consumer unit upgrade should be carried out alongside the charger installation, rather than compromising on protection to avoid that conversation.

Domestic versus workplace installations

Domestic installations are usually a single charge point wired back to the existing consumer unit, completed within a day including testing and certification. Workplace and small fleet installations more often involve multiple charge points sharing a single supply, which typically requires a load management system to dynamically share available capacity between chargers rather than each one drawing full power simultaneously.

Workplace installations are also more likely to need RAMS documentation, particularly where installation takes place in an occupied car park or alongside ongoing business operations, and often benefit from being planned as part of a wider commercial fit-out or refurbishment programme rather than as a standalone job.

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

There is no published flat rate, since cost depends on cable run length, whether an earth electrode is needed, and the charger specification chosen. A free site visit is used to assess this, with a written quote typically provided within a day for standard domestic installations.

How long does installation take?

Most straightforward domestic EV charger installations, including testing and certification, are completed within a single day. Installations needing an earth electrode or a consumer unit upgrade alongside the charger may take a little longer.
