What goes wrong with poorly planned data cabling
Data cabling is easy to get partly right and hard to get fully right, and mistakes are often only obvious once decorating is finished or equipment is installed. Around 60 words of context before four specific problems.
Interference from poor separation
Data cable run tightly alongside mains power cable, especially over long parallel runs, can suffer interference that shows up as intermittent speed drops or dropped connections, faults that are difficult to diagnose once the cable is buried in a wall or under flooring.
Incorrect termination
Cat6 and Cat6A performance depends on correct termination at both ends, maintaining twist rates in the cable pairs right up to the connector. A rushed termination can pass a basic continuity check but fail to deliver the bandwidth the cable is rated for.
No testing or certification
Without proper cable testing, a fault such as a split pair or marginal signal loss may not show up until real equipment is connected, by which time the cable is often already routed behind finished walls and expensive to access again.
Underestimating future capacity
Cabling installed for a single device today, without spare capacity or a properly sized patch panel, often needs supplementing within a few years as more equipment, smart devices or desk positions are added.

Site visit and outlet planning
We walk the property or office with you, agree outlet positions based on desk layouts, TV points or equipment locations, and identify the best route for cable runs relative to existing containment and power circuits.

Quotation
You receive a quote covering cable, outlets, patch panel or rack where needed, and labour, usually within a day for domestic jobs or about a week for larger commercial fit-outs.

First-fix cable runs
Cat6 or Cat6A cable is run through walls, floors or containment with proper separation from power cabling, coordinated with any electrical first-fix if the project involves a wider renovation.

Termination and second-fix
Outlets and patch panel ports are terminated, faceplates fitted, and any patch panel or rack mounted and labelled clearly so each port is identifiable for future changes or fault-finding.

Testing and handover
Every cable run is tested for continuity, wiremap and performance against its category rating, with results recorded and handed over so you have a reference for the completed installation.

Cable categories, containment and installation methods
Data cabling performance depends on choices made before a single cable is pulled: category rating, containment method, and separation from power circuits. Getting these right is what determines whether the finished installation performs to spec for years.
Cat6 versus Cat6A and where each fits
Cat6 cable supports Gigabit Ethernet over the standard 100-metre run length and 10 Gigabit speeds over shorter distances, typically up to around 55 metres, making it a solid choice for most home offices, TV points and standard office desk positions. Cat6A is rated for full 10 Gigabit performance over the full 100-metre run and has tighter shielding and construction to reduce crosstalk, which makes it the better choice for server rooms, comms cupboards feeding multiple floors, or offices planning for higher future bandwidth needs.
We size the specification to the actual use case rather than defaulting to the more expensive option everywhere: a single run to a home office rarely needs Cat6A, while a commercial patch panel feeding twenty desk positions with growth plans often justifies the additional cost and thicker, less flexible cable.
Separation from power cabling
BS 7671 and industry cabling guidance both recommend maintaining separation between data cable and mains power cable, particularly over parallel runs, to avoid electromagnetic interference degrading the data signal. Where data and power cable must cross, we route them at right angles rather than parallel, and where they run in the same containment for any distance we use a physical divider or maintain the recommended spacing rather than bundling them together.
This is one of the areas where having qualified electricians install both the power and data cabling pays off directly: the person planning the data run understands exactly where the power circuits sit, rather than working from a guess or having to coordinate blind with a separate contractor.
Testing and certification of completed runs
Once terminated, every cable run is tested with a cable certifier or qualified tester for wiremap correctness, confirming each pin connects to the correct pin at the far end, and for continuity and length. For Cat6A installations, or where a client specifically needs it for compliance or handover documentation, full performance certification against the category standard, covering attenuation, crosstalk and return loss, can also be provided.
Testing at this stage, before decoration or furniture goes back in, is what catches a marginal termination or a damaged cable run while it is still cheap and easy to correct, rather than after the space is finished and back in use.
Domestic runs versus office and commercial patch panels
A domestic data cabling job is usually a handful of runs from a central point to specific rooms, terminated at simple wall outlets, and can often be completed within a day. Office and commercial installations typically centre on a patch panel and rack in a comms cupboard or server room, with individual runs to each desk position labelled and cross-referenced against a floor plan, and are usually carried out under RAMS alongside a wider fit-out or refurbishment.
For commercial sites we also consider power requirements for any active network equipment in the rack, coordinating dedicated circuits or additional sockets as part of the same visit so the comms cupboard is fully functional rather than needing a follow-up electrical job once the network is live.

How much does data cabling cost?
Cost depends on the number of runs, cable category and whether a patch panel or rack is needed. We do not publish fixed prices; a free site visit lets us quote accurately, usually within a day for domestic jobs.
Should I choose Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6 suits most home offices and standard office desk positions. Cat6A is worth the extra cost for server rooms, comms cupboards or offices planning for higher bandwidth needs in future, and we will advise based on your specific use.
Can you add data cabling during a rewire?
Yes, this is often the most efficient time, since cable runs can share the same opened-up walls and floors as the electrical first-fix rather than needing separate access afterwards.
Will my data cabling interfere with the electrics?
Not if installed correctly. We maintain proper separation between data and power cabling and cross them at right angles where they must meet, following recognised cabling guidance to avoid interference.
Do you test the cabling once installed?
Yes, every run is tested for wiremap correctness and continuity, and full performance certification against the category standard is available where required, particularly for commercial installations.
